Radio interview with Jay and Will Liu about...The Rooftop....what else?? ;)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0T4W6IdCkE&list=PLbHLPahX3mJ7dNLQLS-2jg7zyqyc_ApIc&index=12
The DJ has actually watched a sneak preview of the movie and felt it was very intriguing...as much as Secret was.
Here are some interesting insights from the director and producer:
Jay was very intent on keeping as much as possible a surprise for movie-goers and it was extremely difficult to get him to agree to the footage to be put in the trailer.
The Rooftop was conceptualised when Jay was doing The Green Hornet; he actually had a few stories in mind but felt this was more doable.
Will says Jay is very good at improvising music to suit a particular story but such music is not suitable for pop songs. So in the end, they felt...why not a soundtrack for a movie?
They definitely hope to win awards for the music.
Jay's directing style is not definable during The Rooftop...different feel from Secret.
Jay's acting has more range here compared to Initial D.
He likes to act with his friends...more natural.
Edited out 30mins of footage to get the final two hours of the movie.
Will: When I watched it with the DJ as an audience, it was a different feel and that the movie seemed to end too soon. Which is a good thing.
DJ: There were many impromptu-like and ad-lib-like moments in the movie.
Will: Had many brainstorming sessions to work out the storyboards and visuals. Meticulous attention was paid to details.
It will premiere in North America and be the closing film for the NYFF.
Jay wants to show the world a different side of Chinese movies.
The supporting characters are played by his friends with whom he has worked with for many years.
He likes to do that as he feels they are very natural together and it comes across nicely on screen.
Will was initially sceptical about doing The Rooftop as he felt it was actually more difficult to shoot.
But Jay wanted it because it was different from the usual Chinese movie, with all that he wanted to incorporate.
Three months of shooting, in China and Taiwan.
Costumes, props, etc...all had to be as realistic as possible, even for the extras!
Jay did the shopping himself as he had his own vision...flowery shirts!
Stylist is from Hongkong and has a similar mindset as him for the vintage stuff which he likes.
Jay was inspired by the director of Romeo and Juliet, Baz Luhrmann whose style in that movie combined an old-time story with a more modern feel.
Back to The Rooftop, Jay says the name of the lead actress felt right for the character's name.
The love story and romantic style is very Jay Chou-esque.
Very old-fashioned, cute and pure.
Jay likes simple ways of showing love.
Holding hands, etc....very unlike present-day shows.
Evident from his MVs, where he does not indulge in anybig love scenes.
First love is the sweetest.
Jay says he finds it very sweet when he sees older folks walking hand in hand, more so than when young people are kissing madly in public. That was the sort of feel he wanted for the movie.
After work, Jay still hard at work doing the details, changes of scripts and Will would have to print out the new scripts early the next morning for the actors.
Let me end with some nice pics, as usual:
Cheers!

Another fangirl gets Jay Chou's autograph!
Ok....everyone here can officially go green with envy when you read today's post, which I've taken from Celestia's account about her absolutely serendipitious meeting with His Royal DIAOness at his autograph session for The Rooftop on 12 June, just five days after she had seen him at OPUS JAY Singapore...lol!
Behold the signature at the bottom of the poster:
And here is Celestia's fangirl rave about the experience:
"I was in Taipei for a holiday and was pleasantly surprised that Jay would be there for an autograph session for The Rooftop the next day.
So of course I made plans to go. ;)
I reached the venue at around 9am and it was already super crowded (what to expect...it's JAY!).The ticket sales started at 11am but Jay would only be there at about 1pm.
I bought the tickets and waited patiently for him to arrive. It was scorching hot but everyone stood in the sun. I managed to find a spot that was nearer to the stage. ( I wanted to be nearer to him! Haha!) Well, 1pm came but there was still no sign of him!
The Emcee was entertaining us on the stage but I wasn't listening. ( too excited 'cos going to meet him for the first time!)
Finally, after about 15 mins, the emcee announced his arrival and he appeared with the female lead.
Everyone screamed!!!
He started smiling for the media and we were screaming for him to look over to our side. The emcee tried to assure us that they would do it later. But it didn't happen!
We screamed for Jay again and he turned for us!
That's when I managed to take a beautiful shot of him. He's so kind and treats his fans so well!
Love him!
Then the photo taking session started and everyone started to queue up to make their way up to the stage to see JAY! I was super excited and was planning what to say to him!
Finally it was my turn.
Looking at his handsome face and his dimpled smile , I nearly died! Haha!
The security refused to let us take pics on stage as Jay had to sign 2000 posters!
After the signing ceremony, he left quickly as he had to rush for another event.
That concludes my brief encounter (with more to come) with the Man himself, JAY CHOU!"
For more pics of the event, here is a link the the FB album from the official Rooftop Page:

Sigh...how come that didn't happen to me when I was in Taipei last December??

Xinai says she is very happy to be there.
Jay tells how Will Liu chanced upon her at the traffic crossing and as it turned out, her look was exactly what he was looking for, to suit that era.
Xinai is from Xi-an and she's very grateful for the opportunity she was given.

Jay: We held many auditions. I was a little anxious about her lack of experience but after a while, realised she looked the part.
Kenny: At first, Eric was supposed to be her father but the look was not right.
Xinai: I felt very lucky and wanted to work hard. I didn't think too much about the fact that Jay was the director. Of course, I know who he is. He could be strict and demanding.
Jay: I have to be critical as a director.
Jay: Feeling a bit stressed about performance at box office. Competing with myself. Xinai is a strong character herself, despite looking very young.
Re GMAs, he's very happy to have been nominated. He hopes to win the Best Album award.

Another HAWT mag cover...omg...!
Somebody shoot me now....look at those cheekbones....!
Jay's been looking really dapper!
I'll end with the latest trailer, which has new scenes...making me even more excited for this movie!
Lol...the part where Xinai is in the car with LZG reminds me so much of the Bella/Edward car scene! (I'm a Twilight fan too.)

And a nice pic of Lang Zi Gao with his car:
My thoughts:
I'm very impressed with Jay's manner and decorum at all these events so far.
Very calm, collected, yet with some humour and always keeping the focus on the movie and his work.
The new scenes are interesting but I'm waiting to hear what the rating will be.
Someone told me it might be R18 but to me, a PG13 is more likely, if not General.
One more thing I just have to do before signing off....
*FANGIRL SQUEAL*
Omg....Jay looked SOOOOO HANDSOME in all the events and the magazine covers so far!!!!!!
